Adana Overview |
Adana is located near the Mediterranean on the southern side of Turkey, near the town of Tarsus. However, due to its high temperatures and humidity it is not a favoured tourist spot and the attractions are limited.
It is an important transport point and although it has some very hotels, it is a town mostly for business travellers. Nevertheless the few attractions on offer are not to be missed should you find yourself in Adana. |

Adana Essentials |
Adana Archaeological Museum - The museum was built in 1924 and has ancient artefacts from not only Adana but also other towns such as Tarsus, Gaziantep and Mersin in the region. It is therefore considered to be the museum for the entire region. The main entrance has a Gate Lion which is from the Hittite period and two Augustus Statues. Inside the museum the visitor will see sarcophagi, jugs, catapult shots and stone cutting artefacts. The Akhilleus sarcophagus is from Tarsus and is made of marble and depicts the Trojan wars. There are many more artefacts of interest from the early ages to the Ottoman period with a large variety of oil lamps, gods, goddesses, coins, jewellery, glass objects, Seljuk tiles and the Mosaic of Orpheus Playing the Lyre.
Adana Ataturk Museum – This museum was originally one of Adana’s traditional houses. The house was built in 19th century and is also where Ataturk and his wife stayed in March 1923. The house is made of timber, brick and stone and is a two story structure with bay windows and a pitch roof and has been preserved in its original state. Inside the museum the visitor will find many treasures, such as over 2,000 books written in Ottoman (Arabic alphabet), newspapers, a wax statue of Ataturk, an engraved coffee table and various weapons which are housed in the armoury. Throughout the museum the visitor will find plenty of exhibitions in the different rooms of the building. The entire building was converted into a museum in 1981.
Ulu Mosque – This interesting 16th century building built by Halil Bey in 1507 was built of soft stone and was enlarged in 1541 with the addition of another building. The mosque can be found at Seyhan Caddesi Taskopru Civari and is famous with its octagonal tower, double coloured rock and Iznik tiles. The Mosque also has a colossal doorway with an inscription in Arabic and has eight minarets.
Ramazanoglu Bazaar – Don’t leave Adana without visiting and browsing through the bazaar and buying a Karatepe rug. The bazaar can be found in the Ramazanoglu complex in the city centre and has been the centre of trade since the 16th century. The market originally had shops on three walled sides; ateliers and khans as well as special goods on offer. Today however, there are only two covered markets, Gon Khan and Bazaar Turkish bath.
Feasting – You cannot possibly leave Adana without trying their speciality. The city is famous for its Adana kebap; this is made from minced lamb mixed with hot peppers and then charcoal grilled on a skewer. While enjoying the speciality try the local drink called salgam; this unusual drink is made from purple carrots, turnips, garlic and lettuce and if that doesn’t appeal to your taste-buds try aslama which is a liquorice drink.
