Useful Tips
- by Sue from Cambridge
After using Dolmus and Taxi for the first few days, we rented a car and decided just to go and see where we would end up. We had a lot of fun and saw a lot that we would not have seen any other way. We drove with the topless jeep into mountains where we had a lot of rain and also had to wait for a cow on the road which wouldn't move.

Alanya Overview
This beautiful holiday resort is located at one end of a rocky promontory between two long sandy beaches. 800 years ago the Seljuk Turks favoured Alanya as a seaside resort due to its mild climate and the good harbour.

Today visitors to Alanya are attracted to the long sandy beaches, the warm water and its deep history and although this is a very popular resort it still maintains a lot of its character and is less crowded than Side.

There are modern hotels, plenty of fish restaurants, cafes ad bars and if you travel along the coast road to the harbour from the lovely park in the town centre you will find numerous shops and boutiques to tempt you.

Alanya Essentials
The Citadel of Alanya – After conquering and rebuilding the city in 1221 the Sultan of Selcuks, Alaaddin Keykubat, demanded that the citadel be built. The walls are approximately 6.5km long and about 250metres above sea level. The citadel consists of 83 towers and 140 bastions. To supply the town during the medieval times with water almost 400 cisterns were built and today some of these cisterns are still used. The Sultan had his palace built at the peak of the peninsula.

Today the citadel is still inhabited by local people and silk and cotton are still woven and authentic meals are served in small gardens. If you feel energetic you can walk to the citadel which will take you about an hour.

Museum of Archaeology – The museum was opened in 1967 and has two sections one of archaeology and one of ethnography. The oldest article in the museum is a stone dating back to 625 BC and has an inscription written in Phoenician language and can be found in the Archaeology section. This section also exhibits ash boxes, coins, marble, bronze, fired soil, glass and mosaic items belonging to the archaic, classical, and Byzantine and Hellen periods.

In the ethnography section the visitor will find such items as carpets of Turkoman nomadic tribes, colourful sacks, clothes, saddle-bags, pieces of ornaments, guns, manuscripts and a whole host of different exhibits.

Cleopatra Beach - This very popular beach is 2km long and has been awarded the Blue Flag status. The beach is wide and sandy and the water is warm and not too deep and is part of the Damlatap Beach. There are plenty of refreshment stalls which sell fast food and drinks on the beach. Activities such as jet skiing, sea bicycle and parachuting are available along the beach front and behind the beach you will find sports fields and parks. Sunset is a great time to walk along the beach as the setting sun displays some spectacular sights.

Damlatap Cave – These caves were discovered by accident in 1948 and are located at the western foot of the peninsula. Visitors to the caves will find that the 50m passage enters into a cylindrical cavity which leads to the basement of the cave. Although the caves are fascinatingly beautiful they are also famous for the air which is apparently advantageous to asthmatics.

Scientists have found that there is 10 to 12 times more carbon dioxide in the cave air than normal air and that both the radioactivity and ionization in the cave may be the reasons for it assisting those with non-allergic asthma. At the entrance to the caves there is a small market and the beach is situated in the front of the cave.

Kleopatra Turkish Bath (Hamam) – Why not kick start your holiday with something completely different and try the Turkish Baths. Here you will be treated to a pleasant foam bath and a really good massage. It is a comfortable and healthy way to get rid of the tensions of work and jet-lag and you will feel refreshed and ready to enjoy your adventure in Turkey.

Alanya Calendar - Pick of the Year's Events
Victory Day (30 August) - Commemorates the day the Turkish army defeated the Greeks on this day in 1922. The result of the Independence War was determined by this final victory and within a few weeks thereafter Turkey was liberated and the rule of the Ottoman dynasty abolished.

Kurban Bayrami (Festival of Sacrifice) – This four day religious festival is held in March and marks the end of the Hajj or pilgrimage to Mecca. The first morning of the Kurban Bayrami is the time when sheep, goats or cows are slaughtered publicly and can be a disturbing sight.
