Konya Overview |
Konya is situated on a high plain. It is a conservative city and is known for it's pious inhabitants. Is has become increasingly modern and has a prosperous appearance. It would be advisable for women not to wear sleeveless shirts and both males and females should avoid wearing shorts as it shows signs of disrespect.
You are in carpet country now and if you are in the market for a good Turkish carpet, bear in mind that the "middleman" takes 30%, so rather go shopping alone and be prepared to use your bargaining skills. |

Konya Essentials |
Alaeddin Mosque - Konya's largest mosque lies in the heart of the city and is surrounded by a beautiful wooded park. Completed in 1220, the mosque's tiled mihrab shows some of the best Seljuk tilework.
Konya Fair - Opposite the Alaeddin Mosque, this amusement park is a good place to give the kids a break from all the cultural sites.
Mevlana Museum - Mevlana was a philosopher and the founder of the Mevlevi dervish sect (better known as the "whirling" dervishes). The museum is an enlargement of the original lodge (tekke) and holds Mevlana's tomb.
The interior of the lodge is quite spectacular with it's crystal chandeliers and the Nisan Tas (a bronze cauldron which was used to collect rain water and was believed to have healing powers). You will be supplied with a sarong by the museum staff should you be wearing shorts.
The Seminary of the Slender Minaret - Just a few minute's walk from Alaeddin Park you can find the seminary which houses the Museum of Wood and Stone Carving. The Minaret is a sight in itself, being beautifully tiled.
Sems Mah. Hamam - 7 Serfettin Cad. (Tel 3530093) for a complete bath and massage in true Turkish style. |
