| Urguep scenery is quite lovely. Public transport is not reliable so get wheels of your own and really see this beautiful place. Motorist are crazy here, seems you must take the gap and just go; just drive as the locals do and then you're ok! |
| Urguep Overview |
Urgup is in the center of the Cappadocian wonderland, seven km east of Goreme Valley and twenty-three km east of Nevsehir. Its ancient name was Assiana, and until 1923, when Turkey became a republic, a large Greek population could be found here.
Surrounding the city are beautiful landscapes of grain fields and vineyards due to the abundance of sunshine, volcanic soil and water. |

Urgup Museum - Worthwhile display of textiles, costumes, weapons and books, as well as ceramics and statues from the prehistoric to Byzantine times. Tarihi Sehir Hamami - A complete unisex bath with massage/scrub and sauna. It looks as though it might have been used as a small church originally.
Turasan Winery - This winery, located just uphill from Hotel Surban, is the supplier of 98% of Cappadocia's wine. Free tours and tastings in its rock-carved wine cellar are available.
Armagan Disco - Disco tunes and Turkish pop can be heard pounding out of the door under the "Born To Be Free" neon sign. The occasional belly dance act may also be seen at this club.
Aios Vasilyos Church - Only 3km northwest is this magnificent subterranean church, which was built into the side of the valley in the early 7th century. It's history and many frescoes are quite interesting. |
